Thirty Yoshino cherry trees adorn the Liberal Arts Quadrangle. This variety originated in Tokyo around 1870, and were planted in the Arboretum some sixty years ago, but were replanted here when highway construction forced their removal. Now they are near the end of their natural life, and they are being replaced with younger trees a few at a time, a project led by the Class of 1959. The trees are such a special part of the campus, and I'm glad they will be around for years to come.
